This map of the Rue Monge area dates from 1812 and 1759 maps (le plan cadastral; le plan de Mickel, respectively). In this map, north is down. Key: l'Hotel de l'Académie is ABCD; B = le grand salon (grand entrance room); C = le laboratoire de l'Académie. In old French parlance, "Hotel" meant any larger building. E = the birthplace of Bernard Courtois. It can be seen that the laboratory was directly across the street from Courtois' birthplace. Names change over the years; at this historic time, the name of the street by the Academy was Rue Ponternant.
